Hello, my name is Brooke Monville. I've been a third shift Custodial Specialist since 2023. I have six years' experience in custodial work prior to being hired here. I enjoy the nights and working with the student workers during summer in Housing.
It's a thankless job and most don't realize how much we custodians do behind the scenes. I'm grateful for everyone on my shift and the rest of the facilities department for the sense of community I personally feel. They've made it seem like more than just a workplace sometimes!
Outside of work, I enjoy traveling when finances permit. I've been to Finland and Estonia. I used to enjoy dog sledding and love the U.P., but now I like to relax at home with my cat, Pumpkin. I love music, all kinds from all over the world, and that's how I usually wind down.
My job at SVSU is important to me, and so is being in a Union. I hope to continue working here for a long time!

This could be you!

Picture
Each month, our Member Corner is a place where we highlight the people behind the work: the support staff who keep SVSU running day in and day out.
This time, instead of featuring one person, we're holding the space open for you.
You don't need a special title or a standout achievement to be featured. Every role, every path to SVSU, and every perspective adds something meaningful to our shared story.
Whether you've been here for decades or are still settling in, your experience matters and deserves to be seen. If being featured feels a little outside your comfort zone, know that you're not alone! Please know that we make the process as easy as possible. Answer a few short questions, share a photo if you'd like, and get recognized by fellow members who appreciate the work you do.
This space is about connection, appreciation, and lifting one another up. If you're interested, or even just curious, please reach out to Communications Committee Chair, Christiana Haight, at [email protected]. We would love to help share your story in a future issue!

Christiana Haight
Administrative Secretary for the Office of University Communications
Picture
Hello! My name is Christiana Haight, and I joined SVSU in October 2024 as the Administrative Secretary in the Office of University Communications.
In my role, I get to support a wide variety of projects across campus, from coordinating communications to helping keep track of the many moving pieces behind our creative work. One of my favorite parts of the job is the people. I love getting to know others here on campus who care deeply about SVSU and put so much heart into what they do.
Being involved with SSA has added another layer of community for me, and I’ve met some great people because of it. I currently serve as chair of the Communications Committee, where our team works together on member emails, newsletters, and important updates. It’s very important to me that our members feel informed and supported, especially as we navigate changes and challenges together.
Outside of work, most of my world revolves around my two daughters. We spend a lot of time painting and doing crafts together. Our kitchen table is usually covered in brushes, paper, or whatever project we started the night before. Poetry is another creative outlet that grounds me, and I love attending readings and workshops at the Roethke House whenever I can. When the weather is warm, you’ll usually find us exploring parks, trails, or anywhere that lets the girls run freely and burn off some energy.
I’m truly grateful to be part of SVSU and the SSA community. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow in my career, supporting the people I work with, and contributing to a campus environment where everyone feels seen, valued, and encouraged.

Vincent Karpovich
Custodial Specialist - 3rd Shift
Picture
Hello, my name is Vincent Karpovich, and I am a third shift Custodial Specialist at SVSU. Before I was hired here in October of 2024, I worked as a janitor for two years.
I like being in custodial because it allows me to support the functioning of the university and also to learn about new equipment. During my shifts, I enjoy listening to music, and when I spot a cool insect or spider, I have to take a picture before returning to my tasks.
Working at SVSU has also allowed me to restart my college education. I had first enrolled here as a student after graduating high school, but it was not right for me then, and I ended up dropping out before winter break. This year, I re-enrolled and was able to earn my first college credits during the spring semester.
I am double-majoring in Sociology and Communication and am currently involved with the Sociology Club, English Club, and Red Poets Society. I was able to attend the Michigan Sociological Association Conference in October with my professors and peers. At some point, I would like to present work at this conference, too.
Outside of my SVSU activities, I like going to the Roethke House and the Hoyt Library. My hobbies include writing, drawing, and drumming. Coconut and Pumpkin are my two cats who are friendly companions. This year, I have been trying various Indian restaurants that a coworker and a few professors have recommended to me. I like to remind myself that new things and unexpected changes will keep me from stagnating as a person, and I aim to improve myself and the world around me.

Kathy Anderson
Administrative Secretary

Picture
Hello, my name is Kathy Anderson, and I'm the Administrative Secretary for STEM@SVSU and MiSTEM Region 10. This coming January will be my 21st year at Saginaw Valley State University. In my role, I support STEM@SVSU and coordinate many events for students and teachers to attend. Chief Science Officers, Hour of Code, STEMapalooza, STEM Teacher Dinner, Teen Science Café just to name a few and this year we are hosting STEMFest, which is a K-12 event. During the summer, we host camps for students from kindergarten - 8th grade. In my role for MiSTEM Region 10, I maintain a contact database for K-12 teachers, purchase supplies for STEM Star teachers as well as the usual office related duties for both departments. My position on campus is funded by five Cost Centers and I have to maintain a calendar to account for the work that I complete so they can be accurately charged. In Workday, I have to maintain it to four one hundredths of a percent which can be challenging at times. My husband and I have 3 children and 4 grandchildren ages 2 - 23. We own 40 acres, and farm 36 acres of beans and corn. Some of the corn we use to heat the shed in the winter. We have a German shepherd named Belle, and raise chickens for their eggs. My husband and I used to have a portable welding and fabricating business, so when he was working out of town I used to cut out and weld chutes and shanks that were used to put in fiberoptics next to railroad tracks and bridges. I enjoy watching the Detroit Lions and Tigers and spending time with friends.

Maggie Willett
Recording Secretary

Picture
Hello, I'm Maggie Willett, Secretary to the Dean of the College of Education. This October marks my 8th year at SVSU, and I've loved being part of this community. In my role, I wear many hats, but a major responsibility is managing Faculty and Adjunct pay in Workday. I also handle course assignments and make changes as needed. Learning the ins and outs of faculty/adjunct pay and credit loads has been both challenging and rewarding. One of the things I cherish most is seeing my family become part of the SVSU family as well. My daughter, Sophia, is a Business major, an Athletics Event Student Employee, and a Defensive Player on the SVSU Women's Varsity Lacrosse team. My son, Grant, will be starting this fall, pursuing a Finance degree, and my youngest, Gabby, may join us at SVSU in Fall 2026 — or possibly follow my daughter Gracie to GVSU (yes, that other school). I believe deeply in the power of higher education and take great pride in helping my children reach their goals. What I love about being in a Union and on our board is the sense of unity and support - we have each other's backs. Together, we are stronger, and our collective voice truly matters.

Dawn Gillespie
Treasurer
Picture
Hello, my name is Dawn Gillespie. I currently serve as the Administrative Assistant in The Charter Collaborative Office (formerly the School/University Partnership Office). I’ve held this position since the office's inception in 1995, after joining the University in 1994 through a grant-funded program called Earth Vision. A fun fact: the second director of our charter office was actually my 5th-grade teacher!
In my role, I support 18 public school academies authorized by SVSU. I work closely with school boards and leadership teams on compliance matters, among many other responsibilities. I’m also a notary public.
Over the years, I’ve witnessed many changes at the University—and within the union as well. I currently serve as the Treasurer of our union and am grateful for the dedicated members who serve both on and off the Executive Board.
Outside of work, I served for 25+ years as the Worship Leader at the church I attend. I enjoy golfing, geocaching, playing the violin, as well as teaching myself piano, and creating art, whether digitally or on canvas. I love spending time with my family, including four wonderful grandchildren. I also enjoy glamping and going on adventures with my husband, Dave, to whom I’ve been married for 30 years.

Jessica Klein
Financial Services Representative
Picture
Hi! My name is Jessica Klein, though most people know me as Jess. I’ve been with SVSU since April 2022, working as a Representative in Campus Financial Services.

Not long after joining the university, I became a member of the Support Staff Association (SSA) and currently serve on the board as the Corresponding Secretary — a role I’ve held for just over a year.

I’m also taking advantage of SVSU’s Tuition Discount Program, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in general business. Outside of work and school, life stays busy! My son recently graduated high school, and my daughter will be starting high school this fall. In addition to my role at SVSU, I also work as an office manager for a small business.

When I need to unwind, I enjoy spending time with my family, and I stay active by organizing and playing recreational volleyball and softball.

Communications & Philanthropy Committees

Picture
Hello. I was thrilled to be hired Dec. 2022 as the Engineering Faculty Secretary and to become a member of the Support Staff Association Union soon afterward. I firmly believe in the power of unions as a voice for the people and I am gradually becoming involved. Currently, I am a member of your Communications & Philanthropy Committees, and I volunteer for misc. tasks when I can. Originally from Michigan, I returned to spend time with my ailing Mother after raising a family and living in the Denver, Colorado area for 30 years. During that time, I earned my BA in Behavioral Science from Metropolitan State University of Denver. I am very happily married, love reading, animals, and thrifting for clothes. I am also a pescatarian.  I believe in a glass half-full, encouraging others, and I always root for the underdog. In solidarity!

SSA Newsletter Editor, Philanthropy and PR/Events Committee

Picture
Hi! I have been the Faculty Secretary for Biology & Physics for approximately 4 years. I graduated from SVSU in 2011 with a BA in History and expanded my studies at Indiana University receiving a MA in Islamic Studies & Arabic. I moved back to the area because Michigan is where my heart and my family is. I love the outdoors and have recently become absorbed in the bird watching world. I am married to my husband (who I met at SVSU) and we have one son who is the light of my life. I also am the editor of the SSA Newsletter & a member of the Philanthropy Committee & PR/Events Committee. I am a strong union supporter and truly believe that change doesn’t come from the top – it rises from the ground.
