What is PAC?

Voluntary PAC contributions from MEA members are used to help elect higher education leaders, from statewide university trustees to local community college boards. Of every dollar contributed, 40% goes back to your coordinating council to invest in local political races.

What has PAC done for me?

1) Record education budgets for higher education operations, including employee pay and benefits.
2) Advocacy against efforts to reduce academic freedom, such as those we see in Florida and other states.
3) Expansion of college access, including programs like Michigan Reconnect, that will help meet our goal of 60% post-secondary completion by 2030.
4) Pro-labor representatives to Michigan university boards appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer who have an open door to hear concerns from faculty and staff and their union representatives.
5) a new state department - the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education Advancement and Potential (MiLEAP)- to better coordinate resources for students from preschool though higher-education.
6) Restoration of the House Higher Education Committee to provide a venue for higher education policy to be fully vetted and debated legislatively, under the leadership of former educator Rep. Carol Glanville.

What has PAC done for children and teachers?

1) Implementing free school breakfast and lunch for all students.
2) providing a record level of state funding for PreK-12+ and higher education.
3) Dramatically increasing investments in student mental health support, student loan forgiveness for educators, school safety, educator recruitment, rural transportation and more.
4) Fixing the state's broken teacher evaluation law and replacing it with locally driven evaluation standards to help educators develop their craft.
5) Eliminating prohibited subjects of bargaining, including teacher placement, evaluation, support staff privatization and more, as well as doing away with automatic financial penalties on employees when a contract expires.
6) Providing much-needed tax relief for retired educators and working families including rolling back the unfair tax on retired school employees' pensions and expanding the Working Families Tax Credit.
7) Finally passing common-sense gun safety legislation that requires universal background checks, safe storage of firearms, and extreme risk protection orders.
